State of the Boards

I thought a thread up here would be appropriate for people to comment on the state of the Boards as of this moment, if they think they looking good right now, think they're going in the right direction, etc.

I believe this is the right folder for such a thing...

"Use this board to talk about clips, games, these message boards and anything else current on this site. Topics unrelated to AdultSwim.com risk being deleted."

That's the full description of this folder, so it seems to fit pretty well.  Just thought it might be a good idea to try and have them all in a single thread :-)

No flaming (particularly individual users/mods) no chatting, etc.  Check the Guidlines/Folder Definitions and the FAQ if you're unclear on any of the rules.

Again.  Do NOT flame anyone, and don't bring your personal vendettas in here.

the state of the boards? this board is in a constant state of choas and confusion. most people that come here have never been to a message board and don't know how to post responsibaly, or are too ignorant to do so. you could bring in all the most experianced mods you could find, and it wouldn't help one bit.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but you get it anyway.

The Rants folder isn't really about Rants anymore. It's a current events discussion. I don't mind a current events discussion, but the current events threads in Babbling tend to just fall to the way side. I'd like to see a return to pure rants. The Hater's thread has become a thread devoted to people discussing their feelings about their hatred, not really about hate anynmore. Not to mention the constant bashing by users of their most hated AS shows.  I realize DH's intentions when creating that thread was for hating AS shows, among other things, but it evolved into much more than that. So, I guess I can't really fault users for what they're posting there, I just have to skip over them.

The Adultswim.com folder was an excellent idea. I like this folder, and I like to help out users with their difficulties. That being said, there's a lot of non-discussion of the site and more show related topics. Something needs to be done about what has become 3 different threads of people seeking help. Luuv's "For all with Questions"thread was started with good intentions, but should have been locked shortly after he started it.

Williams Street Culture is kind of a mess and I tend to stay out of it.

Babbling is always a fun folder. But there's to many repetitive topics. I think it's because users are to lazy to use the search function. And why should they? The duplicate topic rule seems to be enforce as needed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, IB is a wasteland. It's not the fun folder that it used to be. That being said chat/spam threads are way down thanks to the mods. Which brings me to my next topic:

The mods. As I just said, chat/spamming is way down. They mods have been doing a fantasic job lately. I have my problems, but those are really just my problems and I try to keep them out of here. With the leaving a one mod (who shall remain nameless) and the seeming absence of another, the boards are still in great shape in no small part to them. I would like to see an increase in the fight against trolling and flaming, but I don't think that's going to happen, especially with trolling. Everyone here seems to do it because nothing is done about it. Trolling is wrong and leads to flaming. Duplicate threads are causing a problem, because mods aren't excercising their power to delete them, but at the same time, we the users aren't using our ability to notify the mods about them.

Ranking need to be abolished. It acomplished nothing and leads to spamming. End of story.

I am overall satisfied witht the state of the boards. But of course they could always be better.

well byte here we go.

from reading what was posted so far i guess i would have to be the opposite.

The boards kinda blow wind right now, Rant folder is modded pretty well same with the William street culture and Adultswim.com folder are modded well too.

however!

The babbling and incohere babbling are really bad, just yesterday i was in babbling and reading a thread on (someday i'll be a swimfan) by Prince and after about 3 pages the next 2 pages were all chat/spam sex talk between Prince and another user and that thread is still up and running for some reason. I mean its 5 pages and there is so much sex chat i am shocked its still running.

Which leads me to believe the number of mods are down or they are not logged on enough.

Not that the current staff is doing well they are........it just seems the boards are really loose right now and much stuff is slippin.

I think some business went down about a mod disagreement on something (what that was i don't care) and now there are not as many, i really only see DH and Nu but the other mods ?????

so in summation the bab and incohere bab folders are loosely modded if modded at all.

and this is no means a slam towards any mod, i know you guys are understaffed.

Swimmod_Deus is no longer with us. If you look at any of his posts (if they're still around) he's a SwimFam.

And I think another one of the mods seems to be on hiatus. So that only leaves, what, five mods?

I think the message boards are in a state of confusion and choas right now. You have all of these new members coming in and most of them have not read the rules they just go and start posting right away.  It doesn't matter what folder it is in they will post anything anywhere, and i think that is what is getting on everyones nerves.  Then most of them can't undersand why their threads get deleted.  Then most of their threads are on topics that already have been discussed, they don't check the FAQ's.  I think if they were to read the rules it would calm the boards down just a bit, and the mods wouldn't have to do so much work.

the boards...I love them
I love the new features, I like having a personal icon and a signature. This is all very cool.
However, I don't like the whole post count and ranks crap, that's caused a lot of commotion.
Even still, I enjoy the boards whether they were all high tech or simple and old. The discussions and the enviroment of AS and life (even the babblers and spammers) around me is what comforts me to stay here, that there is something to do and somewhere to be.

I agree with the idea that chaos is definitely the state the board is in. However, the mods say that things will get better with time, and who I am to disagree. I guess we will just have to wait for the improvements.

This is technically the first board to which I have been an active contributor, so I am most likely not as knowledgeable as you all. My question is what is "trolling." I know what flaming is, but I have no clue about trolling.

Trolls are generally defined as users who go in a thread and make a post to generate a negative reaction. Like going into a pro-Inuyasha thread and saying something like I think Inuyasha is stupid. This is different than going into a debate thread and saying something negative.
There seems to be a lot of this here on AS done by everyone including mods.
Trolling is just what trolls do.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. What does your second sentence have to do with trolling?

Okie dokie. I personally think we're moving in a positive direcction, but there are a few problems that I need to address. Excuse me if this gets extremely long, I have a lot to say...

The mods. No, this isn't a flame against them. I'm actually glad of what you're doing (most of the time), and I suggest that you keep up the good work. The only problem is, that we don't have enough of them. On the old forum, all the threads were all listed on one single page. Very simple to navigate. And you guys could keep it clean easily with your numbers. But. The new layout consists of more pages to sift through, taking much more time. It now also requires you to go through every single folder, because it's not in that easy one-page set-up like before.

I've noticed that there's rarely more than one or two mods on at any given time. That is a problem. With all the labor required to moderate the boards, we'd need atleast four on at all times during the day and late evening to keep the [Noise] section in check. Our half dozen amount of mods worked great on the old forum. But now we've expanded, and we need the amount of mods to expand with it.

Incoherent Babbling. I don't know why or how it got like it is, but that folder needs a major purification. It's full of repeated threads, spamming, and out-right idioticy. It's getting horrible down there, and something needs to be done, before it's too late.

Chatting. We've all done it, though not all of us can admit it. I for one can. But that's beside the point. Luuv has posted a thread somewhere in [Noise] explaining of what chatting involves. Sadly, it's still very general. We need to give a full definition of what chatting is. Actually, I rarely see threads involving the sort of "chat" you describe - "OMG LOL WUTS ^ ???//" - but I still see threads being closed down for chatting. I think we need to further clarify what chatting is, because it seems that certain mods have different views of what chatting is.

Rank Cheats. Okay, maybe it isn't really cheating, but there are many problems with its system that let people easily increase rank "illegally." I think ranks are a great advantage to any forum. It shows who's the die-hard posters, and who the newbies are. But! It has many flaws. Its system is easily cheated in many ways. People spam their refresh button to get page views required. I know I'll probably get flamed for saying this, but people should increase rank ONLY in online time. It's the only way to keep people from cheating the system.

More Ranks. We should have more ranks. Like, after every 5000 minutes you've spent online, you increase a rank. And after 25,000 minutes or so, you get the "VIP Rank." To those that don't know what that is, that is a special rank given to the older members. At that time, they're allowed to delete what title of a rank they have, and input something else. Like, instead of it saying "SwimFan" under my name, it would say some random title. It's a great feature, and that wouldn't be violating any rules to my knowledge. VIPs also have the ability to upload avatars, but since that choice is removed, I guess that ability would be obciously omitted.

I'll add more reasons if I can think of any.

Members have been coming and going ever since this forum opened up late May. It's always been like this. People post a single thread, reply to it for one or two days, and leave. This happens many times, and none of them bother to read the FAQ.

That's why repeated thread topics mainly exist.

There's nothing we can do about it.

Yes. We definitely need more mods. Hell, Toonzone has about 5 mods per forum, and they have at least 20+ different forums.

Another thing is that the mods shouldn't segregated. All the mods seem to do is just sit around and mod. They don't join any topics or whatever. They should do away with the SwimMod_XXXX stuff and let the mods just be regular users, except with the ability to mod. After all, if the mods make respectable posts and conversation, maybe more will follow thier example. But as it stands now, they are royalty and we a peasants.

Well we don't need forty mods or anything. A good dozen would help though. Because as it is, practically each afternoon, sometimes even 7 or 8, there isn't a single mod online. If we're going to have this few of mods, they need to atleast be on most of the time.

If they cannot do this, then maybe they should reconsider being a mod.

Mods do the best they can for us,  if you think you can do better than go to SwimBuddah and tell him.  They can't be online all the time, no one can.  They have lives just like we do and you ca't expect them to be online all the time or even most of the time.  If they did that then AS would not be as good as it is now.  They wouldn't be trying to get new shows they would be on here moding.  So give them a break, beleive it or not they are trying.

Trust me. We know what we're talking about. We also know when the mods are slacking on the job or not. I never said they aren't trying. If you actually read what I said, I actually congratulated them o nthe work they've done.

Not that many. I'd say we'd need a minimum of 15.

But the mods shouldn't be some high-and-mighty group that do nothing but lock and delete threads. The only mod I've seen join in a random conversation recently in DH. If they'd just make the responsible posters mods, and they just keep on going like they normally would, except with the added duty of moderating, things may eventually get a lot smoother.
