I whole heartily agree.  I don't have much of a problem addressing this here, because this seems to be an emerging problem down in Noise (particularly, Rants and Babbling).

Sarteck, I'm afraid the point most people seem to be missing is that if they are ticked off, just don't post.  If you're going to risk coming across as nasty and condescending, it won't be of much help to anyone.

Generally, if you're going to post in a thread just to attack the premise of the thread, or the author for making the thread, you shouldn't.

I personally don't understand the people who post things like "Wrong Folder" and the like.  It isn't being helpful, and I'm sure they must know that.  The only reason I might see is for their own gratification.  To feel like some kind of an authority on the matter.

If possible, if you see a thread you feel obligated to respond to because of a notable violation and the person just might need some guidance, you should be as friendly as possible and point the person to the FAQ and/or Guidlines/Folder Definitions for an explaining on the rules, and wish them a good time.

It's not our job to dispense any kind of punishment, or to declare the fate of threads.

It also might be a good idea to check out Luuv's thread for anyone whose in the mood to help.

"For all newcomers, all w/Questions, & all helpers"

Final Note: If you're trying to help, remember, you're trying to help the person who might need it.  Try to Help Them.

(The final note sounds entirely redundant, but it seems that some people don't keep that in mind)

Sunny, for a name like that, you're awfully grim sometimes :-)

Few threads really make a difference, but I at least like to keep a place where I can just express my thoughts on whatever seems to be up at any given moment on the Boards, as well as discuss their general health.  I don't expect every new person to come in and reach a revelation (there have probably been thousands and thousands of new people since this thread has been created, and I don't expect any to stop in here).

And one last point to go through...

It seems like the new Mods have had some impact on the Boards, as people have noted.  The number of Mods needed estimated by people earlier in this thread may have been a tad high.

One final note (this is a very general note, to everyone who has been so kind as to respond here): Try to only post in here when there is something to discuss.  There's no harm in the thread dying for a week or two, if there are nothing really of interest to talk about.  Redundant posts are no fun.

(My apologies for two long posts in fairly rapid succession, but that's all I'll probably have to add for a while)

Thanks for your time.

Lol you had like 3 final points on your last post.

I am not saying what was discussed prior wasn't valid because it was and like Sarteck stated reading and discussing the nuances of the board DOES change people's (hopefuly for the better) opinions on how they go about their board business when signed on.

its just (to me that is) lately i have been posting about board politics because the threads that i see are not what i want to post on (yes only you can prevent boring discussions)

From that stand point I really do believe every topic that needed to be addressed has been and I really do feel that stuff like this has been going in a loop the last few weeks and i am expressing what lil frustration i have with politics about the boards.

I am sure at some point i will be hypocritical of myself and be doing talking about something that will probably happen with the boards in the future (because something always does)

but i just wanted to state my own opinion on the "state" of a user on the board. I am not angry or overtly frustrated, its just bogging me down because i did sign on because i had a few questions about Bebop and FLCL back in october and here i am today:smileyvery-happy:

oh and the with a name like Sunny you sure do seem grim, well just like day there will come the night, the whole 2 sides to every coin cliche', i think the last 3 months i have been a less downer of a poster.

But for my Final point...................................j/k Byte your the man:smileywink:

Where that was going, I'm not sure.
About what is being said...
The new mods. Wow. I didn't expect the level of participation and skill they have with handling massive messes. April Fool's had nothing on them. Once again, I prob sound like I'm brown nosing, but seriously. They're making the board a lot stronger.

Politics

Reply to Sunnysidez86 - Message ID#: 2145392

I would miss the last major discussion we had about board politics would I?

Having been in a rant with Luuv today about, his word, "helptrolls" I feel this is an intresting perspective that I never really thought of.
I gave an example of what I assumed this (as I called it at the time) oxymoron meant.
*Spam or wrong folder is made in a new thread*
                    "Spam''
                    "Dont spam"
                    "Idioic responce"
"I said DONT SPAM!  YOU ARE A SPAMMER!"
                    "Super idioic responce"
"For the love of god and all things holy, stop posting here!"
*thread locked on account of flaming potential*
Luuv thought that my example was rather exadarated but apt.  (he also said he enjoies oxymorons when drunk...what "he was")
I went from april fools thread to april fools thread trying to tell them to post in the offical "I hate you AS" thread.  Eventually it got to a point where I refered the SAME member 3 times, yet she kept making another one now with anger about her old ones being locked...even tho I told her they would.  On the fourth one I said something like: "Look!  You had 3, 3, locked.  Are you retarted?  There going to lock everyone you make, so just stop!  Theres an offical thread, I linked you to each time.  Go there and complain, their showing your precious Inu Yasha tommorow again without the doodles."

Yup, I went overboard but ya I stand by the "shes retarted" position.

ok get ready for a kicking transition

I asked Odin later if they knew what was coming, or if they were atleast warned that the boards were going to become a warzone.  He told me that they had no idea that anything was gonna happen, although I think we all expected some sort of prank.  This went well thanks to our new mods, who performed admirably.  Thank GOD we had them, as far as I saw they were first to begin damage control.

Torrent a word of advice, warn em next time ya plan something thats gonna make the boards go balistic.  Atleast that way they know they need to be on to keep things in hand.

I need a final point....soooo I'm gonna add another thing to the mix
                                                 TRANSITION!
Politics eh?  Isnt that where I started?  Well **bleep**!  Ok so politics.  Well Zoid9000 got elected king of the boards a few weeks back that was amusing, n00bs had a "coup" to remove him...
Ok serious now, cerain users are trying to take member out of their favorate folder *cough* Anti-Chris *cough* rants *cough*  Ya some users anger me to no ends, and seeing them polute folders is painful, but whos authority are theses flamers, who cloak themselves in the garb of defender of the peace, acting on?  I never once saw a mod say, well I cant be there now so flame the hell outa any morons.  Does it up set me to see Whodoothere make a thread, dear god yes!  (as you may have noticed he has come up in most my posts today because for some reason it has always been apt.)  I guess all we can do is report and warn him that its bad to spam.  At that point we leave the thread.  So I think we ...um **bleep** AIM forgot what I was gonna say.  Oh ya!  We all need to set good examples, and help our misguided bretheren, both n00bs and helptrolls.

Sorry about the jumbled, non-logical flow of the thread, I fell victim to AIM distractions.  heh, this post was an hour in the making.

Might take you up on that.

Something I'm a little worried about.
Between a month from now and two months from now, there's going to be a flood of fans. I mean, FLOOD. This might be a little overwhelming, but I think we can handle it. (I know I'm going to be part of this, just to make sure you know.) Just wanted to know what the general feeling about this is.

Ok, I will. Sorry I didn't before...
A flood of "quasi-experienced peoples" (I know this is a blanket statement, give me a sec) will become scenesters and fans. Before, there has been an equal balance of rank, esp amongst the more experienced/older members. (those are seperate, note) There will be so many on that level then...it's almost like violating sacred ground. maybe they can give the vips and stars a step up. I don't know, I just know that it's going to be crazy for lots of reasons next month.

State of the Boards

Reply to ByteOfNarsil - Message ID#: 1478661

Well, we have had quite a development tonight.  SwimTorrent has started to crack down on 'rank cheaters'.  How will this affect the boards?

Well, in my opinion, it shouldn't have as much as an effect as I think it will.  Many of the 26 users that are accused (though not all) think of it as unfair.  Others think that the rank system should be done away with altogether.  In a week from now, when some of the accused are demoted in rank, I think that we will see more threads pop up about the subject, as well.

I could write about how logins should not affect rank (and I actually did have a huge paragraph explaining my feelings on that), but it doesn't concern the State of the Boards.  I think that it is great that the Admins are showing more interest in controlling the rank system of the board, and that they will not tolerate cheaters.  Perhaps this means that the "controls on lower-level users" mentioned in the FAQ might be implemented.

This also means that a lot more whining about rank will come up, along with legitimate questions about it.  The best we can do, as posters trying to help out other posters, is to wait and read what happens so that we can provide answers, both for ourselves and for others.

Onto other business...

The new Mods seem to be doing a great job.  They are catching threads quickly that are in the wrong folder, and moving them.  They also seem to be doing a great job of locking (and later deleting) threads such as "Name the Cat" or "Trigun scheduling error", which is also cool.

I've noticed a decrease in the RP threads that bog the system down in "Processing request" messages, which is good.  However, it also seems that some of the RP chatters have gotten the notion from one of the Mods that RP chat is acceptable.  Considering the amount of bandwidth these chatters consume, I think that it is best if we report such threads at once to the Mods, especially since the "Processing Request" message seems to be getting more and more frequent.

The 'sig glitch' was actually adressed by an admin (SwimTorrent), and he said that they were in the process of fixing it.  Hopefully, this will quell the craze of people searching for it (although a few might still try to find another way around it).  Because of the number of people asking me for the 'secret', I just decided to do away with it and have a normal sig like everyone else.

Action seems to be evolving (or devolving) into, as another Swimmer put it, IB2.  So many threads are popping up there that belong in IB that I am still loathe to touch the place.  However, from what I hear in Rants, the new Mods are trying to clean that up as well.

So, in conclusion, the new Mods are doing a great job, but I still think they need more help.  RP chatter seems down, but that's kind of iffy.  Sigs are going to be returned to normal.  Action Discussion is going to the dogs, but seems to be the focus of Moderation.  Finally, the Admins are taking an interest in the rank system once again.  All things considered, I think that the boards are evolving into a new kind of community on the 'Net.

Board State is still on the rise, I say.

Wow. Thanks for that.
Torrent is kicking tail and taking names. It's interesting that so many people have come forward about the rank cheating. Guess no one wants to lose their stats. lol no really, I think this has put some raw honesty in these people again, and maybe it'll do some indirect good. I just want to see what this will cause on a bigger level.

Sarteck, you're doing a good job with your responsible, and very informational, posting. Keep it up.

Action is devolving into IB2. It's gotten so cluttered and confusing/boring that I have begun to avoid it like the plague. The next area of mod intervention should be there. I'd like to see all the mods go on a collective tail kicking episode and fix that. But maybe that's just me. Maybe.

And now that the "glitch" in the sigs is getting fixed (kind of like when they fire Milton in Office Space), we shouldn't have to worry about the sig crap anymore.

Please don't regard this as a flame.
Look, Unions died in the 80's seniority is a thing of the past. If your tied up on experience being the sole basis of rank here you still don't understand. The dates of membership do not reflect anything but when you signed on to the board. As long as your fair in your statements and you think them through before you submit your gonna be ok.
And Ranks, I look at what is said then at who wrote it.Rank does nothing. Remember the Mods are the only ones who implement and enforce any changes on these boards. Please notice there are no flowery statements of praise for the mods, they do a job that cannot be fun and deal with privledge daily. So let them worry bout it. or in laymans, Don't worry, Be Happy....... :smileyhappy: And finally, change is good for every system. it keeps them from becoming stagnant. Which in essence is life itself. you do want the boards to stay alive??

Well my man, half your post is now void.

With the green light given to IBs for RPs things are gonna be...intresting.

As for rank demotions, I wrote big long paragraps in that thread so Ill refer anyone who wants to see my discourse on my future demotion there.  I plan to start a new thread when this takes place about the issue, tho Torrent should unlock the thread if he has no plans to respond to those addressed to him (that being why he locked it).

*controls anger over my demotion*

I earned my rank, and I stand by it.  However, the fact that SwimScen. arent being reviewed for rank cheating is highly unfair.  They have a log requirement and I suspect that they were cheating too.  Or heres a doosy, what if someone hast quite reached Fan but rank cheated.  When they do, I dont see that the oversight will continue, and as such they get off scott free.  This should apply to everyone or no one.

**bleep** I said I wouldnt rant on that issue!

Umm anyone seen much of Swordfish II lately?  A few min here and there basicly... so SwimMod Isen err Swordfish hasnt been here to guild his own thread Sarteck has taken over, which is nice on his part.  If you stop annoying the mods perhaps you will disapear soon too.  Might I suggest SwimMod_Ahura_Mazda or SwimMod_Amesha_Sepentas  (10 pts for the religion in question, no cheating).  Im only kidding, unless it happens then Sarteck your the man, reFan me!

Heh, that would actually explain a lot.

Anyway, I have notced something that ACTUALLY pertains to this.  Older (or otherwised recognized members) tend to hang together.  The newer members seem to chose a path and walk it.  Either comunal posts of SwimShadies, or join in with the threads the older members post.  I dont understand why it is that older members all hang together.  Perhaps its a perception issue (I am gonna present that possiability so dont flame it) and I am simply picking out the names I recognize, but it seems like some threads are all shadies or all scensters + (or super Voyeurs like Sarteck and Pushkyn).

Thats how I noticed Swordfish's abscence.  Usual threads he frequents he is nein there.  *shruggs* Luuv said that there was a clique element and perhaps this is what he meant.  I dunno, so perhaps Im dead wrong but by all means ideas on this I would love to here them.

[gonna bump the "suggetions" with a new idea (once I remember it)]
