to me, it screams reflection or mirror image, something along those lines.

Actually, it reminds me of neutrality or nothingness. Apathy, even.
The first rune, the one for "water/lake", would mean nothing mirrored.

Apathy?  "Things of themselves" implies inherent meaning.  It does not state that there ISN'T good and bad, simply that things in and of themselves ARE NOT good or bad.

It's a very existentialist thing to say.
