Tim and Eric ended their Awesome Show after 5 seasons two years ago. I have swore by Tim and Eric since their viral days- before they even graced television with the classic Tom Goes To The Mayor. I have spread the good news of their comedy to friends and family alike. I have tirelessly defended them when those who didn't understand or appreciate their humor bad-mouthed them- calling their show juvenile or "ran-dumb" (which believe me- it was not). I drove hours on end to see their Awesome Tour. I supported them endlessly- buying dvds, posters, shirts- all they had to offer. I loved them.
Then
I built this film up to such impossible heights in anticipation that it is unlikely my self created standard could have ever been met- but their film didn't even graze middle-ground. I have always "gotten" their humor. I "got" it before they did it- in the days of Andy Kaufman's anti-comedy explorations- but to me there was really nothing to "get" in their feature film debut. They played around with mainstream comedy conventions of the 2000's- Bromance, male debauchery, shock humor, and gross-out gags- but their delivery was so lackluster that the result came close to being of the level of the filth they were poking fun at. Discussing the plot really isn't necessary as the plot provides nothing for the film. The side characters added nothing worthwhile to the effort. John C. Reily's character wasn't funny. Sorry, but Taquito just doesn't match the absurdist, whimsical, philosophizing of the classic Dr Steve Brule. Will Forte became an endless one-note red-faced malicious scream; Will Ferrel spewed his usual "average guy that starts yelling about minor mishap" shtick that he's done since SNL (shudder), and Zach Galifinakis' act seems to have run it's course. (Though T&E used him great in Just 3 Boyz & the Absolut Vodka advertisements). Even the Awesome Show regulars did little to help the sinking ship - seeming self aware to the point of no longer being unintentionally funny but rather being desperate for a laugh and acceptance. Robert Loggia's character was perhaps the worst part of the film, not even remotely funny. Every scene with him and the 'bad guys' was pure torture.
"Plot Points" go no where, like rehabilitating a mall ( which never happens- although a commercial airs for the grand re-opening?), a man eating wolf (that shows up once and dies in that very scene), Tim's new son Jeffery (which is nothing more than an attempt at injecting their patented "dad humor" into the mix- he gets oggled by Tim in a mildly pedophilic manner and is shot by machine guns in mid air after being stolen from his father, a used toilet paper salesman- as boringly unfunny as it sounds), a love interest of Eric's (Tim seduces her, Eric gives her a ring and then she gets shot and dragged outside and shot some more), earning the billion dollars (they don't get the money or seem to care if they do and the Shlaaang corporation doesn't even want the money in the first place- they just want to brutally murder our beloved duo). The constant anti climax isn't approached from the side of anti-humor but rather from a poorly written string of events. Elder abuse, boys going diarrhea on Eric in a bathtub, hammer' getting pierced, Tim having surprisingly unamusing "graphic sex", fake tans and teeth, and drug use are explored- none achieving laughter, uncomfortabilty, or any feeling other than a sinking heart at realizing how far these two have fallen from comedic grace.
See, in this film, Tim and Eric have become parodies of themselves. Their classic editing style is used frequently- each time seen from a mile away- to the point of being no longer funny but a distraction. Now that they have free reign to swear the two (especially Eric) take the easy improvisational route and cuss needlessly. Their cheesy fight scenes often used in the show are recycled to yawn inducing effect. At a certain point i wondered, "Are Tim and Eric not funny?" The truth is they do best when playing actual characters. Their personas in the film are hollow, sarcastic, and clueless. It can work for eleven minutes but stretching such empty characters to ninety minutes is futile. Jokes from the show such as celebrity look-alikes, and Kent "me-me wants a tan" taking out his dentures are recycled soul-lessly as if this movie wasn't made for the long time loyal fans, but for the johnny-come-lately's who claim to "get" and love T&E while simultaneously calling it "random" and "stoner comedy" (which it never was- if anything it constantly made fun of that ill informed notion of the masses). They took out the substance and left style. Rather than playing with clichés they inadvertently embraced them. And any attempt at pseudo-satire greatly missed the mark. Thus, the great balance and intertwining of high brow and low brow dissolved- leaving no brow.
When it boils down to it Tim and Eric were making this for their own amusement because thats how they've approached everything they've created - which is a sound approach. That is why I feel let down. How can a duo who i once deemed "comedy geniuses" find this funny?
All in all this film was a slap in the face- but loyal fans should find out for themselves. I was reluctant to write a review because i was always the one getting upset at those that denounced their work. But then i realized a loyal fan expects more than this from Tim and Eric- and won't accept or applaud anything less than deserved. I hope it was just a skid mark on their career and not a permanent stain.

I honestly don't care to have a debate over any of this, because what's the point of debating comedy... but, I loved the vast majority of this movie.
Their cheesy fight scenes often used in the show are recycled to yawn inducing effect.
About the only thing you said I would agree with, but only because that's all you said on the scene (I would have phrased it a bit different, but whatever)... Also, Forte does swear a bit too much (I have more of a problem with him than with Eric's because at least in this film you know from the begining that these fake T&E's are bumbling idiots stumbling over themselves and most dummys don't know much more 'n fuuuuuudge 'n **noel** n' **noel** 'n **noel**).

Thanks for the post. I pretty much agree with you. I have also been a long time fan and supporter of T&E and I thought the movie would be much better. Oh well.
Maybe next time.

yeah I was pretty disappointed too, I agree w/ what you've said. lots of shtick recycling going on. Taquito was a complete reprise of Casey Tatum but more intelligible and less funny. Will Forte's character wasn't funny in the slightest & solely relied on vulgarity. one of the fighting scenes borrowed a lot from the fighting in Choices. overall it just seemed like there was a huge lack of jokes as well. there were probably more jokes or gags in any one episode of Awesome Show than the whole film. the trailer had me really excited for it but it's apparent that they put the only funny parts in the trailer, like the s'wallow valley advert which was amazing. it seems like they've finally taken the "humour" out of "anti-humour". I really wonder what they were trying to accomplish w/ the film. streamline & polish their aesthetic to gain more mainstream popularity? troll their fans? a subversive critique of the mainstream cinema industry (unlikely)?
I did find some things funny, like the scene where they watch top gun. lots of good tim mannerisms there. also when tim & the girl have sex. and I did like the ending, "Tim & Eric were sentenced to death for the murder of..." juxtaposed with the euphoric music. and then the green screen lo-fi part afterwards which seems to reference the first 'sode of Awesome Show.

I think this is actually the most likely out of the three scenarios you presented. They already know and they have for a long time that their humor has a specific appeal. But they wanted to have all fresh characters in this movie, not just rehash old standbys, so as to make it more accesible to newcomers and to have the film stand alone as its own thing. While being familiar with Tim and Eric's past works definitely helps, this movie doesnt exactly require past knowledge to bring the laughs. Tim and Eric did make it with fans in mind though.
A good portion is a satire on movie-making/hollywood/hitting the big time.
- The movie is about how Tim and Eric squandered their funds for their Diamond Jim movie and the aftermath.
- On two different ocassions the movie is interrupted with presentations to overstate the themes of the movie. JUST IN CASE the audience isn't getting it. Because, you know, movies just have to have themes to be important.
- Tim breaks the fourth wall and explains how they had to pounce on the "hard/soft" joke as writers when it arose.
- They have Steven Spielberg (the impersonator) tell them that as Steven Spielberg it is the best movie he has ever seen.
- They celebrate their movie's success at the end of the movie

I love the first ten minutes best. But!! Watching it a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th time made me laugh every dang time. I think it's a hit! I think most of us fans are used to tim and eric existing in an easy 12 minute span- but putting this kind of comedy into a feature length movie is harder to process, especially because we've all seen a lot of these gimmicks before. Perhaps they were aiming at a new audience, and not just us die-hard fans.

iTunes or on demand services will have it. then in theaters in a month or so. BUT THAT'S ONLY IF YOU'RE IN AMERICA. living outside of murrika there's literally no way to legally see it until it comes out on DVD.

hmm that does make sense actually. still, I don't think it's worth sacrificing the humour to make a little jab at the industry. i'm sure this type of thing has been done before.

Oh man, check out this hilarity: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHTONMVpdJQ&feature
Really does kind of show that they can just deliver more laughs in a short format, many of these movie promo vids are easily as funny as the funniest scenes in the movie.

I agree entirely. that video's really funny. & that creepy face Tim does in the beginning, that's weird even by his standards.

I enjoyed your detailed review, as a T&E fan I noticed this film is much like anything they've done where it takes 2 or 3 times to really absorb all the hilarity. But I could totally understand a long time fan being way disappointed with it. I liked it more when I saw it in the theatre. One thing I would change is where Eric grabs that sword and says "Hells Yeah" that was awful, just a bad moment for them.

I agree with the part where you said you created an unreasonable standard for yourself with this movie. It's definitely enjoyable, and hardly on a mainstream level. It's not quite as out there as the television show, but it's already out there enough that they created a feature length motion picture. I'm just blown away by the fact that it exists. Plus, I liked it a lot.
However, if you were to hold the season 3 or cinco DVDs in front of me in one hand, and the Billion Dollar Movie in the other hand, I'd have to go for the season DVD's 9 out of 10 times.

the best part about that is that you dont have to pick between awesome show DVD's and the movie, you can watch all of them!!!! WHENEVER YOU WANT!!!! But cmon, dont tell me you didnt laugh uncontrollably at the bathtub scene when Tim was cutting his hair off and kissing it as I disposed of it. ![]()

They were just trying to follow the Aqua Teen Hunger Force example, by taking a hilarious show, and using it as the basis of an incredibly terrible, laugh free movie.

Seeing that most of the critisism about the movie has already been made, im going to stop myself from making a big Pizzamaster's Review on it and say just a few things....
There were alot of things in the movie that were hilarious and are a must see for T&E fans (like all the DORBIS commercials, the fight scenes, the fat guy in the basement yelling while playing video games, and of course the trippy scene with Eric in the Bread resturant after being poisoned,) and there alot of unnesesary crap-fests in the movies that were just F-ed up and un-needed (like Eric getting his weener pierced, Eric #### off in the motel room, Eric getting Shrimmed all over, and Tim's disturbing secks scene in the adult toy store.)
Just like Awesome Show, it is hit and miss, but the misses go to more extremes than the show ever did, which might make alot of people not even want to see the hits.
I give the movie a 5 out of 10.

honestly most movies i've seen that are either based on a show or made by tv writers have been bad or mediocre. this one, ATHF, kids in the hall, ricky gervais' cemetary junction, chris morris' four lions, hot fuzz/shaun of the dead, trailer park boys, the simpons, mr. bean. I've also heard the mr. show movie was bad, though i've not seen it. i'm sure there's others i'm forgetting.
I just don't get why everyone feels the need to make a movie.
