Somebody told me today about how anime doesn't even need to BE on TV. Yeah, this guy also believes all anime needs is online streaming and whatnot. I don't agree with that at all.
I wonder if one of those jerks on that radio station said that?
Toonami is a WONDERFUL thing that is going to introduce casual fans to brand-new shows, now with a much sleeker format. And of course, that has already begun with Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins.
Don;'t forget about Ghost In The Shell and Cowboy Bebop. More and more people are visiting those boards!
Toonami is really amazing, and it pissed me off to hear people complain about this very thing they begged and pleaded for! Just because they can't have the animes THEY wanted! People, the lineup is great, the shows are amazing, enjoy it and shut up!

VA Diss of the Day: A fan/friend asked me to call into a radio show in the bay area that was having a contest. Listeners who know "celebs" asked them to call in to the station. Best interview would win Giants tix. I called on his behalf (doing it for his brother - cool guy) - told them who I was... Obviously not recognizing me, they said "Uh, ok...so... what, you do impressions or something?" I referenced some of the more well known shows I've done - After ten minutes on hold, they said "sorry we published a list of celebrities we want to talk to, and you're not on it - your friend isn't going to get credit for this call" Aspiring voice actors, this is the glamor of Hollywood!
...
Are you even an actor? This is news to me.

They think the movie will get more attention if they have "famous" actors. They already make enough money on regular movies. They should leave animated movies to VAs. From what I hear most VAs struggle with funds even if they get a lot of attention.
This kind of thing seems to prevent a lot of new VAs from getting into the industry.
Tara Strong auditioned for the role of Rapunzel in 'Tangled' even though both she and her agent knew it would go to a "celebrity" so the audition was a complete formality. She quoted her agent as saying, "Go with it. They want a big name anyway."
Of course, this doesn't explain Crispin Freeman or Kari Wahlgren sneaking into doing voice work for Disney features.

Wow, this thread exploded into quite an interesting discussion! I haven't seen Arriety, but I guess Disney is kinda like Funimation. They have their own in-house voice talent for their own original animated productions (like Amy Poler and Will Arnett) and it makes more sense to use them and hire a few well-known actors as guest VAs than to go after union superstars like Blum. But that's just my two cents.
Sadly, we may never know a Miyazaki movie with the voice talent of the other anime we watch, but is that such a bad thing? Variety IS the spice of life, and if they wanna recycle Phineas & Ferb voice actors into Miyazaki movies, all the power to them.
Um no. Disney is not like Funimation. Funimation keeps using the same talent in all their shows over and over again, and they are all required to be versatile and great in every character. Disney puts a set of actors through one movie and then doesn't work with them again for the next one.

ALchemist81 wrote:Oh, thanks for clearing that up. I've never heard of Amy Poehler, and Will Arnett sounded VAGUELY familiar, so I just assumed they were Disney VAs. Well, when you assume, you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me"!
Fortunately on an anonymous message board such as this, your "ass" factor is kept rather low, although there is one user who knows my secret identity...
(I'm KILROY...)
No voice actor is owned by a studio. They do a project then their job is terminated until the planets align to bring them back several years later. Unless you're Frank Welker or Jim Cummings, who are in a league of their own.

This is a craw in my sprocket! Anime TOTALLY needs to be on TV in order for it to grow back in popularity. I was DEVASTATED when Verizon and Cablevision decided to cut the Funimation Channel from their service due to "low viewership" and their goal of "bringing you the MOST POPULAR channels"! Hey Verizon and Cablevision! Guess what! That makes Toonami the ONLY PLACE ON NORTH AMERICAN TV THAT PLAYS ANIME IN AN ENTIRE BLOCK! You happy???

Do you mean the thread is rediculous, or the way they treated Steve is rediculous?
Well, if we have it our way with People magazine, soon that radio station is gonna eat their #### words!

At the very least I do think they should be paid more though.

Marriage is a sacred sacrament between a man, a woman, and Lord Kami.
I support traditional marriage, not these liberal politically correct Saiyan-Human marriages. It's sick. What's to stop men from marrying shape-shifting animals? Or Androids? It's a slippery slope. And the King of the World (who still hasn't released his birth certificate) is a socialist trying to shove this crap down our throats. Just the other day I saw a show where a boy turned into a giant monkey! Clearly the evolutionists at work, denying our holy Lord who came from Namek.

I really wouldn't want anime voice actors to get mainstream notoriety. I mean, it would be great for the business, but I don't want my favorite VA's to get jaded and possibly get judged by those that don't understand anime or anime VA's. I think their notoriety is good where it is.
Notoriety or no notoriety, the way they talked to him was presumtuous and rude. They should learn the polite way to talk to people, especially a nice, decent man like him who was only tryin g to help a friend win tickets. He's so decent he didn;t even give rhe stations name. He's a bigger person than I, that;'s for sure.
