i love the opening....especially the shot of milly and meryl running down the hall with guns in hands. the way each individual opening has a few shots from that episode is a nice touch.

as for the first 2 episodes: brilliant. my favorite line: "sorry, i don't do requests."

i listened to the sub for once, and the guy who plays vash is hilarious. he also played the equally silly isaac in baccano! jyb managed to match his goofiness very well.

I haven't had a chance to watch yet cuz of ACEN and all, but maybe I'll watch the sub instead of the dub for ep 1 and 2.  I've heard Vash is pretty awesome in there :smileyvery-happy:

I saw two-ish episodes of Trigun sometime around 2003, but wasn't very into anime back then and never kept up with it. So I guess I'm kind of like a first-time viewer!

Anyways, just saw the first 2 eps, and I've gotta say that this show is hysterical. Vash is such a cool character. I love his personality- from heroic, broody, deep-voiced guy when he's trying to be all "professional"; to crazy, maniacally-laughing fool when he's running around and dodging bullets trying not to get killed. :smileyvery-happy:

Milly and Meryl are fun too, especially since their personalities are so...different. Milly's the pretty, naive, optimistic, bubbly one, while Meryl's the cynical pessimist who thinks there's a greater chance of pigs flying than Vash actually being...Vash!

Overall, seems like a good show, and I'm happy this thread is giving me a motivation to watch it. (Hopefully, I"ll actually keep up with this Old School thread this time...)

Hee, this should be fun. :smileyhappy:

To be perfectly honest, the first time I saw these two episodes, I wasn't sold on the series by any means. I had heard a few people praising the series even before I had a good handle on what anime really was, and when I started watching it on its weekday run back in February or March of '05, I had only been seriously trying to watch anime for a month or two. These first episodes seemed exceedingly silly to me, especially coming after seeing the portions of Wolf's Rain, Big O, and Cowboy Bebop that had marked my introduction to "real" anime. I wasn't sure what to make of Vash at all, or even if he was the "Vash the Stampede" everyone was talking about. I kept on watching, but I didn't see what all the fuss was about until somewhere a bit further down the line. And trust me, when that moment comes, you'll see me gush about it for a paragraph or two. :smileytongue:

Now, though, with the benefit of hindsight, I love these early episodes. Vash is one of the zaniest, goofiest, most emotionally ADD characters I've ever come across, and he's probably my favorite performance of Johnny Yong Bosch. His rapid vocal changes, his myriad facial expressions and bodily contortions, his ravenous appetite for donuts...he's just a giant ball of fun. We've only seen very little of what makes him this legendary outlaw that everyone makes him out to be, and even what we have seems more like blind luck than anything else. Meryl and Milly are awesome too; they have this great, almost Abbot-and-Costello-esque back-and-forth going on. I've always hoped that they managed to earn some big-time hazard pay from the Bernardelli Insurance Company for what they had to go through...and that was just for starters.

Oh, and for any sharp-eyed first-timers who spotted a distinctive black cat running around in these episodes, that would be Kuroneko-sama (literally, "black cat" ), the unofficial mascot of the series. He seems to pop up all over the place, usually without any explanation at all. :smileytongue:

So there doesn't appear to be all that much to discuss yet, but I've come to the conclusion that Vash is hilarious, hot sherrif is hot, and those things they ride are not normal.

I didn't have respect for the early episodes until seeing the entire series either. They are pretty silly. I must admit that the first time I saw Trigun's beginning I didn't think very much of it. But once you have seen the later episodes which are opposite in nature you should become truly attached.

I have all the DVD's and watch the whole Trigun series every couple of months. I truly believe Trigun will ALWAYS be my #1 favorite.

Now that we're watching it together... and even though I've watched it a gazillion times now... I just noticed something I really hadn't paid attention to before.

Even though I'm sure it was only done for comic purposes... did anyone else realize that Vash was running just as fast as the thomases??? Meryl and Milly's coats were flapping in the breeze...and Vash was not only keeping up with them, but he was choking down donuts at the same time !! LOL !!

My favorite scene ,though, from the first episode, is when the 2 guys start suspecting each other of being Vash while Vash is sitting there tied up.... and he looks at them, and says "Ummm...did I miss something?" The expression on his face the first time I saw that had me choking on my coffee (btw, taking caffeine nasally is not a good idea.)!!

The second episode was funny as hEll too.... Milly catching him hanging upside down out side Maryann's window was priceless. She is SOOOO freakin' dense...ya gotta love her.

But as simple as she seems to be... she suspected that Vash was Vash long before Meryl did !

Same here. I looked everywhere for a Trigun boxset at acen and didn't find any anywhere. Pierrot found me one, but he said that the vender was marking the price WAY up just becaues it was the last one he had. *le sigh* So... I'll try looking for other means later and watch all 4 episodes this weekend. If someone wants to PM me with where I can get a quick substitute until I find the boxset at a reasonable price, that would be greatly appreciated. :smileyhappy:

Onto the episodes! I pretty much remember what went on just from wyo's screencaps. First episode is always great. The thugs shooting up the bar will forever be my favorite opening to a series. The little boy with his dart gun (he was in the manga here, not sure about the anime) was precious. Everything about this episode just sets up the tone for the entire series. It's a bit serious, but totally outrageous and funny and action-packed at the same time.

For manga/anime differences, most of the end of the episode with the Nebraska family was just time filler. The other dude hunting Vash did talk to the mayor/sherrif guy, but wasn't involved with the fight with the Nebraska family IIRC. The second episode wasn't in the manga either, but nonetheless it was a good episode. The girl (whose name I forget) continues to be one of my favorite females in Trigun. Lots of hilarity and time to get to know our characters better in this episode. Can't wait for next time!

I think you're a bit confused episode-wise too, kaia, since quite a bit of what you mentioned doesn't happen for a few more episodes yet. :smileytongue: The first episode was about the outlaws Loose Ruth (tall blond guy with trenchcoat and long rifle) and Descartes (huge ugly dude with green mohawk and giant boomerang weapon) getting all muddled about who the actual Vash the Stampede was, and the second portrayed Vash acting as the fake bodyguard of the water-baron's mansion. No Nebraskas, mayors, or boys with dart guns have popped up as of now.

Just goes to show how different the anime and manga are, I guess. >.> That's my bad. So... BOTH of the first two episodes are not in the manga. Got it.

I could have sworn that Loose Ruth had a scene in the manga that was incredibly similar to one of the screenshots that wyo had, but I guess that was just coincidence or something.

So I watched ep 1 last night.  And I almost forgot how funny that first ep was :smileyvery-happy:  Vash was so hilarious :smileyvery-happy:  And the first scene with all those guns shooting the bar apart while vash is just sitting there with a drink.....nothing hits him....nothing hits the drink.  But the bars practically gone :smileyvery-happy:  And then we see the girls and Milly's huge gun drops, that is just awesome.  And everyone's got the wrong info on Vash and going after each other.  It's so crazy.  But then when you watch you see those flashes of seriousness from Vash even then.

So I finally got through episode 2, I was watching it yesterday but then fell asleep. Funny episode. I was cracking up when Meryl fell over all dramatic like when Vash pointed his fingers like a gun and went "BANG". and then Milly asked if she needed help and she was all sprawled on the floor.:smileyvery-happy:

Also poor Vash at the end there not wanting to get arrested.
