Was the David Bowie thing a joke?

When it was revealed that the sovereign was David Bowie is that like a joke for people who know him? Because I wasn't born in the 70's when he was popular so whatever the joke was it went over my head. Or is it more of a homage to him because the creators are fans of his? Or a bit of both?
